Firefighters ambushed in Canfield Mountain while responding to blaze; multiple casualties reported in ongoing active shooter situation in Kootenai County
Kootenai County, ID — A fire response turned deadly on Monday afternoon when firefighters were ambushed by sniper fire while responding to a wildfire on the east side of Canfield Mountain. Sheriff Robert Norris confirmed that two people are dead and multiple casualties are suspected in what he called an “active and dangerous” situation that continues to unfold.
The first emergency call came in at 1:21 p.m. reporting a fire on the Canfield mountain. By approximately 2:00 p.m., reports emerged that firefighters were being shot at as they attempted to contain the blaze.
“This is a very fresh, dynamic and extremely dangerous scene,” said Sheriff Norris during a press briefing. “We are actively taking sniper fire as we speak. We have multiple agencies on the ground and are fully prepared to neutralize the suspect or suspects who are targeting public safety personnel.”
Authorities confirmed that at least two fatalities have occurred, believed to be fire personnel, though official identification and recovery efforts remain ongoing. Sheriff Norris also noted that civilians may still be stranded or in shock on the mountain, and the number of wounded individuals is not yet confirmed.
“We still have people coming down from the mountain, and we may have some who made it to the hospital on their own. It would be safe to assume that the mountain is not clear yet,” Norris said.
Gunfire Interrupts Firefighting Efforts
Due to the ongoing threat, firefighting operations have been suspended. Officials revealed that the gunman or gunmen are using high-powered, modern sporting rifles and are firing from concealed positions in thick brush.
“We are receiving rapid fire,” said Norris. “Our personnel are in extreme danger. The shooters appear well-prepared and are blending into the natural environment.”
As of this evening, no officers have been reported injured, but the sheriff emphasized that the threat remains active. A shelter-in-place order has been issued for residents in the surrounding area.
Multi-Agency Response Underway
The response to the unfolding crisis includes local law enforcement, federal agencies, fire rescue units, and emergency medical teams. Sheriff’s departments from neighboring counties, the U.S. Marshals Service, Idaho State Police, and police departments from nearby cities such as Coeur d’Alene are assisting in the effort.
A temporary emergency operations center has been set up to coordinate resources, including multiple LifeFlight helicopters and air support.
Unknown Number of Shooters in Canfield Mountain
Authorities currently do not know how many shooters are involved. Officers on the ground have reported that shots appear to be coming from multiple directions, suggesting more than one suspect.
“This could turn into a multi-day operation if these individuals are not neutralized quickly,” warned Sheriff Norris. “They have shown no intent to surrender. When someone has a clear shot, I encourage them to take it.”
Fire Still Burning, Containment Delayed

The wildfire itself remains uncontained due to the gunfire. Fire officials say resources will not be deployed to suppress the fire until the area is declared safe.
“We’re at high risk for wildfires due to current wind conditions,” a fire department official stated. “And unless the threat is neutralized soon, the fire could spread significantly by tomorrow.”
Ongoing Investigation and Future Updates
At this time, officials have not released information on the identities or motives of the shooter(s). No arrests have been made.
Sheriff Norris concluded the briefing by stating that a follow-up press conference would be held within the few hours, or sooner if significant developments occur. Lieutenant Mark Ellis will serve as the official press liaison moving forward.
Residents are strongly urged to avoid the Canfield Mountain area and adhere to shelter-in-place orders.
